Import or Backup & Restore Moodle Course Content
Export/Import Courses in Moodle
This article provides the steps for exporting an existing course in Moodle and two methods for importing a backed up course.
To get started, click on the desired topic below:


5. Review the information in the Confirmation and review section. Click the Perform backup button at the bottom right of the screen when you are ready to proceed.
6. The “Perform backup” screen with a progress bar will display. The larger the course being backed up, the longer this process takes.
7. Once the backup is finished you will be taken to the “Complete” screen. Press Continue to proceed.
8. The “Restore course” screen will now display. Scroll down to the “User private backup area” to see a list of backup files you have made. Confirm that the recent backup was successful by checking the timestamp; the most recent file should be at the top of the list. If you would like to save the archived course locally click Download.
A previous course can only be imported after your new course is open.After logging into Moodle go into the new course you would like to restore from a prior backup.1. Scroll down to the “ADMINISTRATION” block. Under the “Course administration” section click on Restore to begin the process.

2. Under the “User private backup area” locate the desired file and click on Restore.
3. Click the Continue button at the bottom right of the screen. The “Preparing to display page” progress bar will appear on screen.
4. After the progress bar finishes, the “Confirm” page will display. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Continue.
5. On the “Destination” page, locate the “Restore into this course” section. Make sure that the Merge the backup course into this course option is selected and then click Continue.
6. Review the Settings section and then click Next.
7. Review the Schema settings and then click Next. If you do not want to restore a specific course item or items, click the box next to the item(s) so it is unchecked before pressing Next.
8. Look over the information in the Review section. Click the Perform restore button at the bottom right of the screen when you are ready to proceed.
9. The “Process” screen will appear next.
10. After the progress bar finishes, the “Complete” page will display confirming that the restore was successful. Click Continue to access your newly restored course page.
Please Note: This method only applies for backups of courses taught within the past year. Trocaire College preserves the courses for three terms before deleting the record. Faculty are responsible for archiving their courses if the information is needed beyond this point.After logging into Moodle go into the new course you would like to restore from a prior backup.

2. The “Find a course to import data from:” page will appear. Select the desired course and click the Continue button.
If you do not see your course at first, enter the course subject and number in the Search Field and then click Search.
Having trouble locating your original course? Make the search as specific as possible.
Example: Search for “NU 124 Maternal / Newborn Nursing” instead of “NU 124”.
3. Review the Initial settings and then click the Next button at the bottom right.
4. Review the Schema settings and then click Next. If you do not want to import a specific course item or items, click the box next to the item(s) so it is unchecked before pressing Next.

7. After the progress bar finishes, the “Complete” page will display confirming that the restore was successful. Click Continue to access your newly imported course page.
